About us

The Eyes & Optics Difference

State Of The Art Technology

We utilize state of the art technology to provide you with the best possible care during your comprehensive eye examination. Our technology allows for early detection and diagnosis for optical eye health.

In store lens laboratory

The ‘one size fits most’ technology doesn’t always apply, this is why most of our spectacles are made on the premises. This is old school and for very good reasons…. one of the fastest turnovers in the industry and tighter quality control!

30 years experience & still going strong

After meagre beginnings in a renovated miners cottage in 1990, we have grown into an experienced purpose built building with 7 highly qualified and friendly staff.

The local difference

At E&O we make it easy for you. We have Medicare online to refund your rebate and HICAPS to access your private health insurance. The architecturally designed building is wheel chair friendly, we have online appointment bookings and a night safe if after hours pick up is necessary. Our onsite lens grinding facilities results in quicker turnaround.

Premium product range

We pride ourselves on stocking the best quality lenses, frames, contact lenses and sunglasses. We have sourced frames from around the world with both function and fashion in mind. All of our ranges have a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.

Sharing our knowledge

For more than 20 years, we have been involved in educating the next generation of optometrists and sharing our knowledge with others in the Optometric community. Our involvement is though mentoring, hosting final year students and giving lectures & talks.

Kusal Panditharatne

Optometrist
Kusal grew up in the South-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. After completing a Bachelor of Science, Kusal found his true passion in Optometry and completed his education at Melbourne Uni. With a keen interest in the co-management of patients with other health professionals and a love of the great outdoors, Kusal was excited to be heading down to Wonthaggi. Outside of Optometry, Kusal is an eager cricketer and aims to find the best Vanilla Slice in the Gippsland region.

Maddi Poon

Optometrist
Maddi was born and raised in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne before deciding to make a sea change to the Bass Coast. She completed her Bachelor of Biomedicine and Doctor of Optometry from the University of Melbourne. Maddi was lucky enough to complete a 6-week internship at Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut with optometry guru Dr Jim Thimons in her final year that bolstered her interest in managing ocular pathology. Maddi has been a soft and rigid contact lens wearer and is eager to help other contact lens wearers in the community. Outside of work Maddi loves the beach, running, hiking and is an aspiring surfer.

Michele

Practice Manager

Michele is our Practice manager. She has been involved with Eyes & Optics since 1996 although she did have 12 years on the Sunshine coast during the 2000s. Michele is efficient, approachable and capable. She is our resident chef, often surprising us with culinary delights for morning tea  and has recently built a new home which has kept her busy finishing it off as well as establishing a new garden.

Karen

Spectacle Maker

Karen is another longstanding employee who started her career at Eyes and Optics in 2005. She started originally as our receptionist and completed the RMIT Optical dispensing course in 2009 and is officially our spectacle maker. Karen’s attention to detail, precision and no fuss manner make her ideal for the exacting job of crafting spectacles. Karen was born in Wonthaggi and often comments on the progress during her lifetime. She loves being a Mum and enjoys family time most of all.

Pānia

Receptionist

Pānia is reasonably new to the area of South Gippsland. She has fully embraced our coastal life, learning to surf, and taking up pottery at the Rescue Station in Wonthaggi. She also wholeheartedly embraces her Māori culture creating indigenous instruments and handwoven clothing while also teaching Te Reo online! Pania is an absolute delight, friendly and helpful – it’s infectious!

Angela

Receptionist

Angela has travelled from the faraway lands of Minnesota after meeting the love of her life on a school exchange here in Wonthaggi. She enjoys being in the garden, adding pops of colour and fragrant flowers here and there. Angela is quite the crafts person once the merry season comes around, hand making gift boxes and bonbons for all her family to enjoy. All loved ones help recreate a winter wonderland with homemade snowflakes to remind Angela of her childhood winters.

About us

State of the art technology

Eyes & Optics has a simple mantra in making sure that on your biannual consultation new technology will be part of your visit. We invest in our state of the art technology both in the consulting room and the optical laboratory. We aim to enhance your vision by using the latest technologies to detect and diagnose underlying eye conditions such as glaucoma and macula degeneration as early as possible.

Some of our most recent advancements:

EIDON

Retinal scanning with best resolution which has superseded digital camera imaging. It has the capacity to penetrate through dense media such as corneal scarring or cataracts.

OPTOS

Optos has revolutionised how we view the back of the eye as it takes a 200 degree retinal scan, through a 2 mm pupil in 1/20th second. Perfect for assessing Diabetic, hypertension, trauma and retinal detatchment disease.

Zeiss Cirrus OCT 500

Zeiss Cirrus OCT is an instrument capable of scanning below and within the retina and is an essential diagnostic instrument for optic nerve disease such as Glaucoma and all macular disorders. It also has the capacity to determine corneal thickness, helping in the diagnosis of Glaucoma.

HUMPHREY VFA

This Visual field machine is considered the Gold standard in Ophthalmology. It is  essential in Glaucoma, stroke and neurological management as well as assessing capability for patients to hold a private motor vehicle licence.

SLIT LAMP DIGITAL BIOMICROSCOPY

Allows magnified images of the front surface of the eye to be documented which has helped the diagnosis and treatment of corneal ulcers, lid disease and foreign body management.
